There were some special soldiers who were sent on a Top Secret Mission. This mission took them to a foreign city in an effort to rescue some of their comrades who were stranded there. The soldiers on the mission were not given any of their comrades’ names, photos or addresses to accomplish this mission. They were instead given a very unusual method of accomplishing their goal.
The soldiers were instructed to walk around the city dressed in clown suits. They were also each given a trumpet. They were told to walk about the city streets, alleys and parks wearing these clown suits and blowing the trumpets very loudly. One could only imagine the ridicule they must have endured from the occupants of that city. Nonetheless these faithful soldiers carried out their orders.
The thing was that the soldiers also had been told that the people they were there to rescue would recognize the sound of their trumpets and so respond. The plan was to give a clear sound of the trumpet so they could come out and identify themselves to the soldiers and then they could be taken to an extractions point.
All the other citizens of that place thought the clowns were foolish and the sounds of the trumpets did not mean anything to them. They made fun of the clowns. Some even tried to pass city ordinances against the clowns. People physically abused some of the clowns. One of them was even killed.
Some of the people that were supposed to be rescued decided they wanted to stay where they were at even though they recognized the call of the trumpets. They did not believe it when the soldiers told them that the air force was getting ready to reduce the city to ashes in a very short time. They missed their opportunity to be rescued.
The Bible says that the message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing but that to us who are being saved it is the power of God. The Bible even describes a “secret wisdom” that even the rulers of this world do not understand. The Bible also says that God chose the method of preaching to save those who believe and that it pleased God through the foolishness of what was preached to save those who believe. Are we one of the people who thinks this is foolish? Are we one of the people who know the sound of the trumpet but do not want to get ready? Or will we hear the sound and get ready for the battle? If we were to get a draft notice from Jesus to enter into service in his Kingdom would we show up willingly for the cause? Or would we become a draft dodger?
It says in scripture that No one serving as a soldier gets entangled in civilian affairs, but rather tries to please his commanding officer. I just wonder how many of us realize that we get to choose sides in this war and there are only two sides. Jesus said if you are not with him that you are really against him. And if you are not gathering with him you are really scattering. In other words when we choose to stay on the sidelines we are really choosing the enemies side by default. The enemy will use us even if we don’t realize or intend it because this is a spiritual war.
